The Irish Benedictine monasteries in Medieval Germany: their Ulster origins and Romanesque architecture
Dr Diarmuid Ó Riain (UCD)
The 2010 Michelene Kerney Walsh lecture will explore the links between Ireland and Germany in and around the twelfth century. These were set in stone by the Schottenklöster – the Irish Benedictine monasteries – which were established in Germany at this time. Dr Ó Riain has undertaken extensive archaeological research into this group of monasteries in order to uncover their social context, the evidence of ethnic identity of the Irish monks and the liturgical and other functions performed within the medieval German towns. The flow back to Ireland will also be assessed, looking at evidence for Schottenklöster priories and the flow of new architectural ideas into Ireland.
